Kuwait

Kuwait 25/27 April

Early aftrnoon we took the flight to Kuwait, together with Richard van Geffen who just arrived here, from Grasso Holland, to stay and work here. Walid was already in Kuwait, where Adearest also has an office. We were picked up from the airport by Walid and Hisham and they brought us to the hotel, Holiday Inn in Salmiyah. A very nice hotel and very new very close to the coast. About 5 in the afternoon Richard and Hans were picked up at the hotel again to have the seminar, which was the reason for this trip. And I came along to have the opportunity to visit Kuwait. I went out for a little tour by night. The first place I went to was Marine Mall, because I've heard so much about it. It's a luxury shopping mall, not too big and quit expensive, but nice.

Vroeg in de middag hadden we de vlucht naar Kuwait, samen met Richard die net over was uit Nederland, die hier komt werken vanuit Grasso Nederland. Walid was al in Kuwait waar Adearest ook een kantoor heeft en Walid en Hisham pikten ons op van het vliegveld en brachten ons naar het hotel, de Holiday Inn in Salmiyah. Een uitstekend hotel wat overigens ook net pas geopend was, vlakbij de kust. Rond 5 werden Richard en Hans weer opgepikt bij het hotel om vervolgens de seminar te hebben, wat de reden was voor deze trip. Ik ben dus meegegaan om eens iets van Kuwait te kunnen zien. Ik ben zelf een kleine tour gaan maken. Naar de Marina Mall waar je zoveel over hoort, een mooie maar dure mall, redelijk luxe en leuk om gezien te hebben. Ik heb er overigens toch nog een shirtje gekocht.

Next morning Richard and Hans were picked up at the hotel again to visit some customers.So I had all day ahead of me and I just travelled by taxi as much as possible, sothat I had enough time to see as much as possible. Taxi charges were ok, KD 1,5 (which is less then Euro 4,5) anywhere within Salmiyah. So I visited Suq Sharq first, as it is quit famous too. However I thought it was supposed to be an old suq, but actually it was a brand new mall, which was also very luxury and expensive, but very beautiful, build in arabic style next to the Yacht harbour.

De volgende ochtend werden Richard en Hans weer opgepikt om die dag klanten te bezoeken, dus ik had de hele dag alleen voor mezelf. Ik reisde zoveel mogelijk met de tax om zoveel mogelijk te kunnen zien in de paar dagen die ik er had. Op zich niet duur KD 1,5 (minder dan 4,5 euro) binnen Salmiyah. Dus ik besloot eerst Suq Sharq te bezoeken waarvan ik eigenlijk dacht dat het een oude suq was, maar het bleek een compleet nieuwe en luxe shopping mall. Wel heel mooi, gebouwd in arabische stijl aan een jachthaven.

I staid approx 1,5 hour in Suq Sharq and moved on to the old suq, in Kuwait City. They call it the cheap suq, which it is, but quality is difficult to find. It is a big suq with a Gold suq in it as well, all buidlings and houses are very old and unbelievable they do not collapse. Many buildings were not renovated after the invasion of Iraq, you can still find the buildings which were bombed. I was told that the Kuwaiti government wants to keep them as sort of a monument. And during my walk through the old suq I bumped into a local Kuwait man.... I was not very happy with that, because I ws not sure what he expected, but at least he gave me a lot of background information about Kuwait. But finely I thought I wanted to be on my own again, it was quit difficult, but I did manage to get rid of him in the end.....

Ik bleef ongeveer 1,5 uur in Suq Sharq en pakte de taxi naar de echte oude suq in Kuwait City. Men noemt het de goedkope suq, wat het inderdaad is, maar weinig kwaliteit te vinden natuurlijk. Het is er echt groot en er zit ook nog een Gold suq in, alle gebouwen zijn oud en ongelooflijk dat ze niet instorten. De gebouwen zijn niet gerenoveerd na de invasie van Iraq, ik heb me laten vertellen dat de Kuwait regering ze laat staan als monument. Terwijl ik over de markt liep, liep ik tegen een Kuwait Local aan.... ik was er niet echt happy mee, want ik wist niet wat ie van me wilde, maar hij heeft me toch nog een hoop nuttige informatie over Kuwait weten te geven. Al vrij snel was ik het zat, het was niet gemakkelijk, maar uiteindelijk heb ik m weten af te schudden.

About 5 Hans returned to the hotel and we went out together for a walk along the coast and to the Marine centre, at the other side of Marina Mall, which is part of this area. There is a boulevard with a Yaght club and many restaurants, where all people go out. This is something we do miss in the UAE.... And also along that coast side you will find the Hardrock Cafe Kuwait. The only one in the world where you will not find any alcohol. Kuwait is 100% alcohol free, however people do drink alcohol and found their way to get it anyway, but they only consume at home. And offcourse I bought myself a Hardrock cafe T-shirt...

Rond 5 was Hans terug in het hotel en we zijn samen nog op pad gegaan, een wandeling langs de kust in het Marina centre, waartoe ook de Marina Mall behoort. Je vindt er een flinke boulevard aan de jachthaven met heel veel restaurants en heel Kuwait city gaat daar een avondje uit. Dit missen we wel in de UAE.... En we zijn ook in het Hardrockcafe Kuwait geweest, de enige op de wereld waar geen alcohol wordt geschonken. Kuwait is overigens 100% alcoholvrij. Alhoewel mensen er wel drinken, die hebben hun wegen wel gevonden om alcohol te verkrijgen, maar wel alleen in prive omgeving. En natuurlijk heb ik nog een Hardrockcafe T-shirt voor mezelf gekocht..

Dezelfde avond waren we uitgenodigd, Richard, Hans en ik bij vrienden thuis om te komen eten. Nou dat vonden we natuurlijk hardstikke leuk, dus rond 9 uur zouden we worden opgehaald. Wij waren de enige nederlanders van de vele aanwezige gasten en het werd een geweldig feest, voornamelijk arabische muziek en er werd de hele avond gedanst, door iedereen zelfs Hans en ik. We voelden ons al heel snel op ons gemak en een feest als dit hadden we nooit eerder gehad, zo ontspannen. Zo iets maak je in nederland echt niet mee, ik vrees dat we niet echt goed weten wat feesten is... Ook al waren we vreemden t.o de rest, het voelde al snel vertrouwd. Om 4 uur liep het feest ten einde, we werden weer netjes bij het hotel gebracht. Dus zo rond 5 gingen we naar bed en mijn voeten deden zo'n pijn van het dansen

De volgende ochtend waren we verassend vroeg op, om 9 uur kwamen we al uit bed en hebben ontbijt genomen in het hotel. We hadden nog een aantal uren voor we weer naar Dubai vlogen, waar we dezelfde avond weer een feest hadden, het oranje feest in Nad al Sheba om 20.30. Dus ik heb Hans nog de Suq Sharq en old suq laten zien en hem nog een korte introductie gegeven van alles wat ik de voorgaande dagen had gezien.

That evening Richard, Hans and me were invited with friends to have dinner at their home. About 9 were picked up again. We were the only ones from Holland of the many guests and it was such a terrific party, with mainly arabic music and everybody on the dance floor, even Hans and me. We felt so welcome and relaxed, we never experienced such party, I am afraid the Dutch do not know what a party really is... Even we were straingers to the rest, it felt all so familiar. Approx 4 the party came to an end and we were brought to our hotel again, close to 5 we went to bed, and my feet were killing me of all the dancing

Next morning we were surprisingly early, at 9 we went out of bed and had breakfast in the hotel. We had some hours left to explore a bit of Kuwait city and later that afternoon we were having our flight back to Dubai, where we had the Oranje party at Nad al Sheba at 20.30. We went again to the old suq and Suq Sharq, so I gave Hans a short introduction of what I had seen the days before.

Al met al is Kuwait geen mooi land, er zijn wat highlights die ik heb laten zien. Het is er vlak, vnl gebouwd langs de kust en de rest is niets meer dan woestijn, een vrij grijs en ongezellig land. Maar de regering is bezig het weer op te bouwen, al duurt dat een stuk langer dan in de UAE. 65% van de inwoners zijn lokalen en 65% van de bevolking is onder de 25. Maar ik ben wel heel blij er eens geweest te zijn en ik heb me prima vermaakt.

Overall Kuwait is not much of a beautifull country, there are some highlights which I showed a few. It is a flat country, mostly founded along the coast and the rest is nothing more then dessert, a quit grey and boaring country. But they are still busy to building it up, which goes a lot slower then in the UAE. 65% of the citizens are local and 65% of the citizens are under 25. But still I had a good time and I'm happy I've been there once.
